Foundations and site works: questions to ask early
Ground conditions, loading and site access shape the civil package. Here is what to confirm first.

1. Understand the ground
Review available soil data and site history before design is fixed. Where information is missing, a site investigation may be needed before foundations are finalised.
2. Confirm loads and finishes
Equipment, racking, vehicles and floor finishes all affect slab thickness and foundation design. Share these requirements with the civil team at the start.

3. Plan excavation and retention
Deep excavation near existing structures may need Soldier Pile or Earth Retaining Systems. These should follow the engineered design and the agreed excavation sequence.
4. Coordinate the structure and services
Embedded items, openings and utility routes need to be shown early. Late changes to concrete work are costly and slow.
5. Think about access and drainage
Site levels, access roads and drainage determine how the finished facility works day to day. Agree external works in the same programme as the main building.
