Steel fabrication: resolve the details before fabrication begins
Clear drawings, connections and tolerances save time between the workshop and the site.

1. Confirm the loads and the purpose
Platforms, supports and mezzanines carry different loads. State the intended use so the design and member sizes match it.
2. Agree drawings and connections
Review fabrication drawings and connection details before cutting steel. Changes at this stage cost far less than changes on site.

3. Check interfaces with civil and services
Anchor bolts, embedded plates and openings should line up with the civil work. Coordinate pipe, duct and cable supports as well.
4. Plan the protection
Surface preparation and protective coating should be specified with the fabrication. Decide whether finishing is done in the workshop or on site.
5. Plan transport and erection
Check member lengths, lifting methods and site access. A simple erection sequence helps the site team work safely.
