Industrial painting: why surface preparation comes first
A coating is only as good as the surface beneath it. Here is how to plan a durable finish.

1. Identify the surface and the exposure
Steel, concrete and plaster need different systems, and indoor and outdoor areas face different conditions. Note moisture, chemicals and temperature before choosing a coating.
2. Prepare the surface properly
Cleaning, removing loose material and repairing defects all affect how long a coating lasts. Preparation is usually the largest part of a good paint job.

3. Choose a coating system, not just a colour
Primer, intermediate and finish coats work together. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on thickness and drying times.
4. Plan around operations
Painting can create fumes and needs drying time. Agree work areas, ventilation and timing with the facility team.
5. Inspect and keep records
Check surface preparation and coating thickness at agreed points. Records help with future maintenance.
